Halloween started many centuries ago when there was a Catholic holiday called “All Martyr’s Day”; celebrated on May 13th. That holiday was later changed to the 1st of November and called “All Saint’s Day”. With this change October 31st, the day before came to be known as “All Hollow’s Evening”. From that came the term “Halloween”.

History says Halloween started in Ireland; where the Celts calendar had established November 1st as the first day of the year, making October 31st the last day. The Celts referred to the last day of ?the year as Samhain. According to tradition, on that day the line separating the living from the dead disappeared; making it possible for the souls of the dead to intermingle with the living. The problem was, it is said, that the souls of the dead contacting the living wanted to possess the bodies of the living so they might escape from the spirit world. This belief caused ancient Celtics to put on costumes of fright which they felt would ward off evil spirits from attempting to possess their bodies.

Many Ancient Gaels also believed that on Halloween, the dissolving of the boundary between the living and the dead became dangerous for the living by causing problems such as sickness or damaged crops. The festivals, in order to prevent these problems, would frequently include bonfires, where the bones of slaughtered livestock would be thrown. At the festivals costumes and masks were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or placate them. “All Hollow’s day” became a tradition, not a day to have fun on, but a day where they had to protect and save their souls and bodies from the evil spirits of the spirit world.

Over the years, the belief that one could have one’s body possessed by an evil spirit on this day waned and Halloween became a more ceremonial event as well as a joyous one for both children and adults.
